Background of the study:
Wrongful convictions undermine the credibility of the criminal justice system, and forensic anthropology offers a promising avenue for reducing such errors in Eket. By analyzing skeletal evidence, forensic anthropologists can provide objective insights into cases where traditional evidence may be inconclusive (Obi, 2023; Ibeh, 2024). In Akwa Ibom State, forensic methods such as trauma analysis and age estimation have played a critical role in exonerating wrongly accused individuals. These scientific techniques contribute to a more accurate understanding of the evidence, thereby reducing reliance on circumstantial or flawed testimony (Obi, 2023). The growing integration of forensic anthropology in legal investigations has led to significant improvements in case reviews and appeals processes. The continued evolution of these methods is essential for safeguarding justice and ensuring that convictions are based on robust, scientifically validated evidence (Ibeh, 2024).

Statement of the problem:
Wrongful convictions in Eket persist due to the limitations of traditional evidence and investigative procedures. The underutilization of forensic anthropology in the judicial process contributes to these errors, calling for a critical evaluation of its potential to reduce miscarriages of justice (Obi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of forensic anthropology on wrongful convictions.
  2. To identify gaps in current investigative practices.
  3. To propose measures to enhance forensic contributions in legal reviews.

Research questions:

  1. How does forensic anthropology reduce wrongful convictions?
  2. What gaps exist in the current investigative methods?
  3. What measures can improve the incorporation of forensic evidence?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Forensic anthropology significantly reduces the incidence of wrongful convictions.
  2. Current investigative gaps contribute to wrongful outcomes.
  3. Enhanced forensic integration will decrease wrongful convictions.

Significance of the study:
This study will contribute to the reform of investigative processes by highlighting the role of forensic anthropology in reducing wrongful convictions, thereby strengthening the integrity of the criminal justice system in Eket (Ibeh, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the effect of forensic anthropology on reducing wrongful convictions in Eket Local Government Area. It does not cover other legal or forensic issues.

Definitions of terms:

  • Wrongful convictions: Incorrect judicial verdicts resulting in the conviction of innocent individuals.
  • Forensic anthropology: The application of anthropological techniques to legal investigations.
  • Investigative gaps: Shortcomings in the methods and procedures of criminal investigations.
